Toy and game expo pulls Sydney crowds

When Charles Bishop’s son took a tumble on a trampoline and landed in hospital, it was the start of a three-month nightmare. Twelve-year-old Josh suffered a severe spinal injury, and recovered at a Sydney hospital from the confines of a full-body cast.

Years later, however, the nightmare has turned into a dream.

Mr Bishop and long-time friend Steve Rohan-Jones have closed the doors on the first day of the Toy Game Expo in Sydney – a three-day event Mr Bishop says has been in the making since that hospital stay six years ago.

“My son had played chess from a young age,” he told AAP.

After the accident, Mr Bishop turned to board games to keep Josh’s mind stimulated.

“I spent months in Westmead Hospital with him, playing chess and other games,” he said.

John is now an 18-year-old university student whose interest in games “comes and goes”, Mr Bishop said, but the weeks of playing ignited his own fascination with board games.

If the numbers are anything to go by, he’s not alone. At least 3000 visitors attended the first day of the Toy Game Expo at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park, on Saturday.

The event features toys, board games and hi-tech gadgets such as a palm-sized crystal optics microscope that allows the viewer to look at small things in 3D.

Mr Bishop said the carpets turned yellow with play-dough and board game enthusiasts packed out a 350-seat game cafe. A 36 square metre Lego pit also proved popular.

“We’ve had adults and kids Lego-surfing all day,” he said.

“People told us we were silly to do this, that people had moved on from these sorts of things.”

He hopes to repeat the event in 2013.

The Toy Game Expo continues at Sydney Olympic Park on Sunday and Monday.
