Trump’s win means no Palestine state, Israeli minister says

Donald Trump’s election victory means Palestinians will never have a state of their own, an extremist right-wing Israeli minister said on Wednesday.

Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett is a champion of Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank. He released a statement within hours of Trump’s win declaring: “The era of a Palestinian state is over.”

Many Israeli settlers expect Trump will end decades of US opposition to settlement building and may give the green light for Israel to annex large portions of the West Bank.

Such a move would destroy any lingering prospects of a two-state solution in which Israel and an independent Palestine live side-by-side.

Bennett leads one of several right-wing parties within Benjamin Netanyahu’s governing coalition and he urged the Israeli prime minister to use Trump’s win as a chance to recant on Israeli commitment to allowing a Palestinian state.

“Trump’s victory is an opportunity for Israel to immediately retract the notion of a Palestinian state in the centre of the country, which would hurt our security and just cause,” Bennett said.
