‘Turkey must shun West’s sway on Syria’

“If Turkey has a problem with Syria, it can solve it through dialogue, but it should avoid any measures that would weaken [Syrian President] Bashar Assad’s government, which is the center of resistance against Israel,” Morteza Hosseini said on Wednesday.

“The United States and Israel do not wish well for Muslims, but rather seek to create divisions among Islamic governments,” he added.

The comments come amid mounting tensions between Turkey and Syria over the recent downing of a Turkish warplane over Mediterranean waters.

The Turkish Air Force fighter jet crashed into the Mediterranean Sea on June 22 after being shot down by Syria, the Turkish premier’s office said in a statement a day after the incident.

Syria’s military also said its air defense shot at an “unidentified aerial target” that was flying “very low” and at “high speed” within Syrian airspace.

Syrian officials say the jet violated the country’s airspace, but Turkey insists the F4 Phantom jet was attacked over international airspace.

At the request of Turkey, NATO held a meeting in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss the incident under Article 4 of alliance’s founding treaty, which entitles any member state to ask for consultations if it believes its security is threatened.

NATO member states condemned Syria for shooting down the Turkish jet and said the alliance stands in solidarity with Turkey.
