‘Turkey supporting armed Syrian rebels’

“Southern Turkey has become a hot-bed for training Syrian armed fighters in guerilla warfare,” Refik Eryilmaz of Turkey’s Republican People’s Party (CHP) told the Turkish newspaper Yeni Chag.

He added that, the unrest in Syria has made the city of Hatay get more attention as the Syrian refugees are residing there and now a considerable number of bullets and textiles for military purposes have been transferred to the city.

The Turkish official went on to say that, “The sending location of this military equipment should be cleared. It seems that it has been transferred from an arms factory.”

“I will visit the city at the end of this week in order to probe the matter. I have credible information regarding this and I am investigating to find out from where and why the equipment is being transferred to the city,” Eryilmaz noted.

He also accused Turkish authorities of providing the rebels with communication and internet services.

Despite the rhetoric of support for peace, Turkey has been backing armed groups seeking to topple Syrian government.

The Turkish opposition has already accused the government of turning into a contractor for the dominant powers to ratchet up the pressure on Syria.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011 and many people, including security forces, have lost their lives in the violence.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing the protesters. But Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, stating that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

Turkey, which shares a 900-kilometer border with Syria, has allowed thousands of Syrian gunmen to take shelter and regroup on its soil. Turkey also hosted the second so-called Friends of Syria meeting last month which reportedly sought to unite the divided Syrian opposition.
