‘Turkish troops must leave Afghanistan’

MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli called on the Turkish government to reconsider the presence of the country’s troops in war-torn Afghanistan.

Bahçeli further questioned his country’s role in the decade-long mission in Afghanistan, pointing out that Friday’s “provocative” incident was not the first of its kind.

He added that more bloody incidents, insults to Islam, and the killings of civilians would only increase tensions.

The request comes days after at least 12 US-led Turkish soldiers were killed when a helicopter belonging to the US-led forces in Afghanistan crashed into a house in the outskirts of the capital, Kabul.

Following the deadly incident, the Turkish government announced that it would continue its presence in Afghanistan.

Turkey has more than 1,800 soldiers in Afghanistan, who are solely tasked with patrols and do not participate in combat operations.

The US-led invasion of Afghanistan was launched in 2001 under the pretext of removing the Taliban from power; however, insecurity has been growing across the country, despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led forces there.

Overall, 3,021 civilians died in violence engendered by the war and 4,507 were wounded in 2011. Of the deaths, the UN attributed 77 percent to militant attacks and 14 percent to US-led foreign troops and Afghan forces.
