Two boats intercepted off Christmas Is

Two boats suspected to be carrying asylum seekers have been intercepted near Christmas Island, 2750 kilometres west of Darwin.

One vessel had 38 passengers and two crews and while the other had 110 people on board.

Both were intercepted by HMAS Ararat on Sunday and Monday, respectively, after being spotted by patrol plane.

The people will be taken to Christmas Island for security and health checks.

So far this month, nine boats have arrived in Australian waters.
