Two die in crashes as biker hurt in unmarked police car crash in Bentleigh

UPDATE 1.55pm: TWO men are dead and a biker has been seriously hurt by an unmarked police car in three separate accidents on the state’s roads this morning.

The motorcyclist, 22, from Clayton South, is in a serious but stable condition after he was hit by an unmarked police car about 9.15am at the intersection of Victor and Centre Rds in Bentleigh East.

He was been taken to The Alfred hospital suffering facial and head injuries with possible injuries to his pelvis.

The accident happened when the police officer did a U-turn in a bid to catch a driver on a mobile phone.

The motorcyclist then crashed into the driver’s side of the police car.

The police officer was taken to the Monash Hospital with minor injuries.

Detective-Sen-Sgt Shane Rix, from Moorabbin Divisional Response Unit, said investigators were trying to determine who was at fault.

“Obviously early days, but it would appear that the member has executed a U-turn and if you do that you have got to make sure there is a clear passage way to do that,’’ he said.

“It’s just a matter of determining where the motorcyclist was positioned.’’

The police car is a write-off.

Detective Sen-Sgt Rix said the learner motorcyclist was extremely fortunate.

He said the officer immediately attended the motorcyclist and rang an ambulance.

Major Collision Investigation Unit and the Ethical Standards Department have been notified.

“The local CIU is also involved in the investigation,’’ Detective Sen-Sgt Rix said.

In a separate incident, a Melton West man died after another driver allegedly crossed onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into a semi-trailer which then hit his car.

Police said a 22-year-old woman in a sedan was attempting to overtake a small truck before the collision early this morning at Plumpton in Melbourne’s northwest.

She is alleged to have crossed onto the wrong side of the road, colliding with a semi-trailer.

The semi-trailer then collided with a Commodore sedan, killing the 46-year-old driver.

Both the woman and the truck driver are being treated for minor injuries in hospital and are assisting police.

Police are appealing for the driver of the small truck to come forward with any information.

And in another fatal crash, a man died after his car hit a power pole at Moolap, near Geelong.

The man, in his 20s, is believed to have lost control of his sedan while travelling along Point Henry Rd.

He died at the scene.

It is understood thousands of homes were without power after the crash.
