UK Border Agency accused of racism

Councillor Mohammed Islam, who has represented the ward since June 2004, said the UK border Agency (UKBA) officers have been “basically going to every single Asian and ethnic minority business” in the area to check whether staff are legally entitled to work.

He also said that he has noticed a notable increase in visits by immigration officers to Asians over the past few months, after last year fellow Riverside councilor Iona Gordon passed on to UKBA a tip-off that a businessman in their ward was employing illegal staff.

“Personally I strongly feel it’s indirect racism, I would say,” the Plaid Cymru councillor told South Wales Echo, which is the daily tabloid newspaper for Cardiff and the surrounding area of Wales

However, rejecting the allegations, the British immigration minister Damian Green said, “We target immigration offenders – not specific nationalities. When we receive clear intelligence that offences are being committed we take action.”

Meanwhile, a leaflet was produced by people from the city stating there will be a protest outside UKBA’s offices in Newport Road, Cardiff, on Saturday.

Warning that black and minority ethnic-run businesses have been “targeted” by immigration authorities in recent weeks, the leaflet added, “This is unacceptable and must end now,” the leaflet adds.

Earlier this month, the private firm Reliance contracted by the UK government to deport refused asylum seekers and foreign prisoners admitted that some of its senior staff display “loutish” and “aggressive” behavior.

According to the company’s self-assessment of the attitudes of its guards, which was leaked to the Guardian, the staff lack respect for ethnic minorities and women.
