UK imprisons hundreds of women

This comes as two years ago British ministers signed up to the Bangkok Rules, new UN standards for the handling of women lawbreakers.

The first analysis into how the UK has performed, found that it is wrongly punishing hundreds of women who pose no threat to society. It also found that the British government is not taking into account the human rights of children affected by their mothers’ unfair imprisonment.

Moreover, the report, which monitored the UK’s 15 women’s prisons, revealed that “shocking” levels of self-harm persist among female inmates.

According to campaigners, although the number of self-harm cases was reduced from 12,000 in 2010 to 9,000 in 2011, the figure was still too high.

The report said that the approach to dealing with mental health among female inmates is poor and that those in control need to start discussing currently ignored themes including “patriarchy, identity, shame, love, attachment, feminism, loss, abuse and equality of opportunity”.

Rachel Halford, the director of the campaign group Women in Prison, which compiled the report, said, “There are still too many women unnecessarily imprisoned, too many women hurting themselves in prison and too many women reoffending on release.”
