‘UN, AL front for West’s plans on Syria’

Kofi Annan is going to report on the latest developments in Syria to the UN Security Council on Monday.

Some segments of the Syrian opposition have rejected Annan’s peace plan, saying it does not call for the departure of president Bashar al-Assad. This is while their main advocate, the US has called Damascus’ agreement to the plan an important step.

Press TV interviewed Ralph Schoenman, a political commentator in Berkeley, to further talk over the issue. What follows is the transcription of the interview.

Press TV: Syria has accepted Kofi Annan’s initiative. Just how much does the peace plan correspond to the problems Syria is facing and how much does it resonate with the people of Syria?

Schoenman: I think the first point emphasizes that this so-called peace plan presented by Kofi Annan is not only coming with the mantle of the United Nations but in particular the Arab League.

Now the Arab League guided by Qatar and Saudi Arabia is in full measure undertaking a military operation in Syria in coordination with the United States and Turkey notably Qatar using Libyan arms and that has been emphasized by the United States over and again.

In fact, the predicate for this agreement with the regime with Bashar al-Assad spelled out by Hillary Clinton when she stated that we will judge Assad’s sincerity if he carries out the requirements which are to order his forces to withdraw from all populated areas. So in essence, what they are demanding of the regime is that it deprives itself of the ability to defend its own sovereignty.

It is not to say that there is no opposition to the regime. But this opposition has been hijacked and nowhere was that more clearly emphasized than in the reports in Los Angeles Times and in New York Times on human rights watch’s findings.

This is on March 20, Patrick J. McDonald in Los Angeles Times about the serious human rights abuses including systematic kidnappings and torture and executions of security personnel and civilians. This is the Syrian opposition forces guided by the United States, British troops, French troops, Qatari troops, Turkish troops and arms.

So the sovereignty of Syria is at stake here; the cover of human rights has vanishingly little to do with the motives. I want to point out as well in reference to this agreement that has been negotiated with the regime under enormous pressure that WikiLeaks published a Stratfor memorandum. This is the Israeli intelligence source Stratfor that “US Special Operation Forces have been active in Syria since December conducting guerilla attacks and assassinations and executions in order to bring down the regime of Bashar al-Assad.”

So the emphasis here must be on the nature of the UN and Arab League intervention with the regime because it is fronting for imperial ambitions and intent. In fact, as the documents make clear, for over a year the imperialist powers with Turkey and the [Persian] Gulf monarchies have been preparing for a full-scale military intervention.

Only yesterday, I will just make this final point on this issue, Obama pledges to deliver supplies to Western-backed anti-government insurgents in Syria. This is while he was in Korea. So in essence, this is a preparation for over a year for overthrowing the regime and overthrowing the government in Syria.

Press TV: There is also a critical issue that has been less discussed and that is the issue of the opposition using a human shield to get to what it wants. We saw it in Homs and we are also seeing it along the Turkish border. How do you explain what many say is a sinister move?

Schoenman: I want to again emphasize that it is not to say that there is not opposition and widespread resistance to many aspects of the government in Damascus. But when there are popular movements that arise, these are used as a pretext by the Western and imperial powers.

They hijack this movement and they intervene militarily because they have an agenda of dismantling countries, seizing their natural resources and dissolving their sovereignty. That is, what the agenda is not only with respect to Syria as it was in Iraq, as it is in Afghanistan and as it is intended in Iran.

In testimony before the Senate Committee on March 7, the Pentagon’s uniformed chiefs confirmed that they have drawn a full-scale war plans against Syria at the request of the Obama White House.

The statements by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey make it explicit that they are working with the right-wing monarchical regimes specifically Saudi Arabia and Qatar with Turkey and are escalating a Western covert operation aimed at bringing about ‘regime-change’ in Damascus.

So that is the real agenda here and nobody is interested certainly not those of human rights are in any way related to this intervention. This is an intervention for dominion, for eliminating sovereignty and for denying the rights of people for deciding for themselves how they will be governed.
