UN chief urges end to Syria violence

“We are deeply concerned… This is an unacceptable situation,” Ban told reporters on Monday, in reference to the violence in Syria.

However, he avoided talking about the fact that the armed Syrian groups are using civilians as human shields.

He also expressed concern over an attack on a convoy of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria.

“More than a dozen of armored vehicles have been attacked and destroyed completely. It is quite fortunate that nobody got injured by these attacks,” Ban added.

The Supervision Mission’s convoy, carrying the chief of the UN observer mission, General Babacar Gaye, came under attack in Talibisa, some 17 km (10.5 miles) from Homs on Sunday.

General Gaye arrived in Damascus last week to replace the outgoing head of the United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria, General Robert Mood.

Unlike the Syrian government, the armed groups have not accepted the six-point peace plan, proposed by UN-Arab League envoy to Syria Kofi Annan in April.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Damascus says ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists’ are behind the unrest while the opposition accuses the security forces of killing the protesters.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country.
