US bishops urge religious freedoms

In a 12-page statement released on Thursday by the bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty, they urged the faithful to hold a “Fortnight for Freedom” during the two weeks leading up to July 4, the Huffington Post reported.

The statement is an indication of probable widespread civil disobedience by America’s 67 million Catholics, and the community’s latest effort to overturn that policy.

“If we face today the prospect of unjust laws, then Catholics in America, in solidarity with our fellow citizens, must have the courage not to obey them,” the statement read.

It added, “No American desires this. No Catholic welcomes it. But if it should fall upon us, we must discharge it as a duty of citizenship and an obligation of faith.”

The document cites a number of perceived threats to religious freedom; among them are harsh immigration laws that could impede the church’s social ministry and university policies targeting campus student religious groups.

The statement also makes a concerted effort to portray the Catholic campaign as bound up with the fight to defend American values from an overbearing central government.

American Roman Catholics assert that the US government has violated the religious freedom of the community by cutting off contracts to Catholic agencies. Several states have denied financing to Catholic agencies that refused to place foster children with gay parents.

The federal government has in addition refused to reauthorize a grant to a Catholic immigration organization that served the victims of sex trafficking.
