US cancels $355mn Brazil fighter deal

“Since the deal is still in dispute, I can only say that the executive chief of acquisitions of the Air Force is not satisfied with the documentation presented by the winner,” US Air Force Secretary Michael Donley said in a press release on Tuesday.

The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer Defense and Security won the contract for the counterinsurgency aircraft deal in December 2011 together with US tech company Sierra Nevada Corporation.

However, another US-based bidder, Hawker Beechcraft Corp, which is partly owned by Goldman Sachs, filed a lawsuit over its exclusion from the bidding process, accusing the Brazilian company of corruption.

The A-29 Super Tucano, produced by Embraer, would be used in the US Light Air Support program to conduct advanced flight training, aerial reconnaissance, and light air support operations, mainly in Afghanistan.
