US seeks to sidestep Iran on Syria: MP

“Iran’s golden role in resolving the problem of Syria is understandable for the global community; however, by ignoring Iran, Washington seeks to portray NATO’s presence as part of the solution for the Syrian crisis,” said Mohammad-Reza Mohseni-Sani, a member of Iran’s Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, in a Wednesday interview with Majlis official news agency, ICANA.

“The US must accept Iran as part of the solution for Syria,” he added.

Mohseni-Sani made the remarks in response to the Wednesday statements by White House spokesman Jay Carney in which he described Iran’s role in Syria as “unproductive.”

The Iranian legislator pointed to Tehran-Damascus cultural commonalities and argued that UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan entered talks with the Iranian officials, as he is aware of Iran’s constructive role in Syria.

This week, Annan visited Tehran to confer with Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili on the situation in Syria.

In a joint press conference with Salehi following their meeting, Annan stressed that Iran must have a part in working out a solution to Syria’s crisis, and regretted Tehran’s absence in a recent international conference on Syria in Geneva, Switzerland.

Mohseni-Sani called on the global powers to abide by Annan’s views and stressed that Iran will not be indifferent to the fate of Syria.

Tehran has repeatedly reaffirmed its full support for Annan’s six-point plan on ending the unrest in Syria.

Annan had wanted Iran to be invited to the Geneva meeting on Syria held on June 30, but the idea was objected by the US and its Western allies.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. The violence has claimed the lives of many people, including security forces.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, but Damascus blames ‘outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups’ for the unrest, asserting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
