US Senate rejects gender pay equity bill

The Republicans on Tuesday rejected the pay equity bill. The Senate voted 52 to 47 to open debate on the legislation, 8 votes short of the required 60.

Women who work full time still earn an average of 77 cents for every dollar men earn, according to the US Census Bureau.

The motion would have required employers to prove that the differences in pay are related to job performance, not gender. It would have also allowed women who believed were discriminated against to sue for damages.

The Republicans were largely silent on the issue on the Senate floor.

Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney was also criticized for not supporting the bill, which may help the Democrats to get women’s votes ahead of the November election.

However, Romney’s spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said “Romney supports pay equity for women.”

“In order to have pay equity, women need to have jobs, and they have been getting crushed in this anemic Obama economy,” she said.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell criticized the Republicans for blocking the bill and said no Republicans were voting for the legislation because it was merely “about rewarding plaintiff lawyers for filing lawsuits.”

“We think it is the wrong way to go about dealing with this issue,” McConnell said. “We have a jobless problem, we have a debt problem, we have a deficit problem.”

“We got a lot of problems. Not enough lawsuits is not one of them,” he argued.
