US Veterans say: Afghanistan and Iraq wars ‘not worth it’

Guardian
October 5, 2011

One in three US veterans of the post-9/11 military believes the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were not worth fighting, and a majority think that, after 10 years of combat, America should be focusing less on foreign affairs and more on domestic problems, according to an opinion poll.

The findings pose a dilemma for the Obama administration and Congress as they struggle to reduce the huge budget deficit and reconsider defence priorities while trying to bolster public support for the continued presence in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Nearly 4,500 US troops have been killed in Iraq and some 1,700 in Afghanistan. Combined war costs since the September 11 terrorist attacks have exceeded $1 trillion.

The results of the survey, presented by the Washington-based Pew research centre on Wednesday, portray the war veterans as proud of their work, scarred by warfare and convinced that the American public has little understanding of the problems that wartime service has created for military members and their families.

  1. Going into Afghanistan was the DUMBEST thing a country could do if it expected to win a war.
    Know why?

    ANSWER: NOBODY WINS IN AFGHANISTAN

I know TPTB knew it before going in (they knew about the Russians there in the ’80′s)…no, they never cared about winning a war…they only cared about making money and achieving strategic global positions. Simply a bunch of psychopaths.

They sure didn’t care about all the innocent people who have died so far…
Vote for Ron Paul. Let’s really support our troops AND BRING THEM HOME!

  2. Vets gotta get together and start their own protests like these other boobs on Wall St. I am sure you guys and gals will have a lot of followers. I’d be one of them!

  3. Vietnam wasn’t worth it either, but many thousands of us Vietnam vets got the shaft because of politicians and their lies, much the same way the current crop of vets are getting the same shaft. This Government is full of liars and can NOT be trusted.Think outside the box people,it’s your six.

    • +

  4. They are certainly worth it to someone – follow the money.

As an aside, all wars ever fought have been the result of decades of utter stupidity (at best) on the part of those officials who should be making friends not carving peoples up into factions and promoting a winner take all situation, were no one actually wins but the fight promoter (usually a bank of some sort or another)

If you look at these situations from outside the box, you can come to understand that all groups have similar activities.

When was the last time your family declared war on your neighbor, sought to destroy them monetarily or abort their children and wrest control of their home from them? That’s right NEVER. Odds are good that if you speak to them, it’s on friendly terms or not at all, NEVER a shooting war.

Our current “leaders” have expanded open hostilities with casualties in the millions over the last decade alone and in the last couple of years have involved at least 7 more countries in open hostilities with massive numbers of casualties. There are some that think this patriotic.

I think it might be a little more patriotic to be making friends, by promoting the greatest advance in human government yet devised and adopted in history – the principle of fair and just government contained in The Declaration Of Independence.

    • yeah but the people for whom its “worth it” arent the ones fighting it.

  5. of course we dont think it was ‘worth it’. that God-forsaken spit of land (iraq AND afghanistan) isnt worth the lives of a single one of our brethren.
The elite know we feel this way about it, that’s why the MIAC report classed us as ‘potential terrorists’ back in 2009.

  6. was talking to a nam vet yesterday, i asked him if it was worth it, he said hell no, and that war was a crime, against both sides

  7. all the wars have been a sham. i participated in ‘just cause’. what a joke. we went down there and killed a whole lot of innocent folks because one of the Gubs lackys -noriega was skimming drug profits and old georgie porgey didn’t like that.
