Vic’s northeast prepares for more floods

Victoria’s northeast is on flood alert as the state prepares for another downpour on Saturday.

Rainfalls of up to 80mm are forecast for the region that has already copped 200mm of rain in the past week.

The State Emergency Service is preparing by mobilising personnel, equipment and about 30,000 sandbags into the area.

“Today will be a day of preparations,” SES spokesperson Laucklan Quick said.

“Tomorrow will be a day of pretty significant concern because we’re expecting somewhere between 60 to 80mm of rain and maybe higher than that.”

He said Yarrawonga, Beechworth, Yackandandah, Myrtleford, Bright and Mt Beauty – which had already been drenched with up to 200mm of rain this week – were the areas of most concern.

Meanwhile, 30 people remain trapped on Mt Buffalo – which had 125mm of rain on Thursday – after a landslide blocked the road out of the area on Thursday afternoon.

There were 28 students among the group and they remained in lodgings overnight and are expected to be able to leave the mountain once VicRoads clear the road on Friday.

There is also a major flood warning for the Murray River upstream from Lake Hume, the Mitta Mitta River upstream of Dartmouth and the Snowy River in Gippsland.

Tallygaroopna, north of Shepparton, was hardest hit on Thursday with residents told to prepare to evacuate with the channel to its east overflowing into the township.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Richard Russell said some parts of the state’s northeast exceeded their monthly average rainfall on Thursday.

Wodonga recorded more than 90mm of rain, Rutherglen had 81mm of rain, and Mangalore recorded 71mm.

“February and March are usually the driest months,” Mr Russell said.

“Normally in summer and autumn there’s a lot of dry days, but this has certainly gone above the monthly average in one day.”
