Child protection advocates are pushing for a public alert system for when high risk sex offenders evade authorities and break out of their GPS tracking bands.
The State Government is considering the introduction of the system which would mimic child abduction alerts.
Bravehearts executive director Hetty Johnston says it would be effective if used sparingly.
“If there’s a dangerous offender out there in the community then that’s exactly what we should be doing,” Ms Johnston said.
“The police have never misused the amber alerts; in fact they’ve been criticised more often than not for not using it quickly enough or often enough.
“I tend to think that they only use it when it is a crisis or when it is an emergency and when the community can actually assist.”
