Washington Navy Yard shooting: elite Boston bombing team brought in

District of Columbia police chief Cathy Lanier said their actions were
“heroic” and “without question saved lives.” One officer was injured by
gunfire. Other police officers were drafted in from Maryland and Virginia.

The FBI has now taken over the investigation from the Naval Criminal
Intelligence Service.

FBI agents descended on the area in force as helicopters swarmed overhead.

Its critical Incident Response Group is on call around the clock seven days a
week to assist FBI field divisions. It specialises in rapid deployments and
“active shooter” investigations.

FBI agents were already working to clear buildings and the agency’s Evidence
Response Team will collect evidence from what is expected to be a
challenging crime scene.

Items of evidence will be sent to the FBI laboratory at Quantico, Virginia for
analysis.
