THEY were introduced for their fleece but alpacas are fast becoming an ideal pet for people living on small blocks.
There has been a growing interest in the animals as pets because they are more affordable than when they were first brought to the country.
The industry has grown from three alpacas 20 years ago to a population of more than 150,000 across Australia – the largest herd outside South America.
Back then an alpaca cost those who could afford it about $10,000.
These days there are more than 3000 breeders and an animal sells for as little as $300.
Bellingen-based breeder Rick Hodgson said he had sold more alpacas as pets in the past couple
of years to people on small acreages on the NSW coast.
“People love their temperament because they are great with kids,” the breeder of 16 years said.

Mr Hodgson, who farms at Bellingen and Marulan, has 60 alpacas and also runs mobile mating company taking different stud males to properties for breeding to improve genetics.
He said alpacas made the ideal pet because were easy to look after, were gentle animals and were not aggressive, he said.
“They are different to sheep, they are much smarter to start with.”
