Zuccotti Park cleaning canceled; protesters cheer as ‘clash with police’ averted

In the early morning in downtown Manhattan, Occupy Wall Street protesters started to gear up for what some considered the first major threat to their nearly-month long residence at Zuccotti Park. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I) had told the protesters that police would enforce a request from Brookfield, the private owners of the park, to eject the encampment for a cleaning at 7 a.m. Friday.

Half an hour before the scheduled ejection, Bloomberg’s office released a statement (see at bottom) saying the owners had changed their minds and would work with the protesters to keep the park clean.

The crowd erupted in cheers, and an impromptu march to Wall Street began in celebration:

  3. Well, when the owners of the park (Brookfield Asset Management of New York) are guaranteed a 168.9 million dollar loan for from the U.S. Department of Energy for their “Granite Reliable wind farm project” and Obama supports the protesters, what did you think would happen here??

  4. The slogan across the board should be simple and factual “ARREST THE BANKERS” the scumbag bankers are behind the mess from every angle. Society should not back down until justice is done ‘one way or another (no matter how long this takes)’ OR, they ‘society’ may cave to permanent servitude “there are no other options on the table”…

  5. this needs to go bigger than wall street, which is only a part of it.
when wells fargo wachovia can launder 385 billion hard drug money,
pay a 2 million fine and no one is jailed, its criminals aiding criminals.
I dont care if a criminal happens to wear judges robes.

DC paying “contractors” 10x what our military gets,
to do things that the military isnt allowed to do,
even though their pay is coming from the same place,
isnt anything legitimate! damn straight they need to be audited for fraud.

DC handing out corporate welfare so “her majesty’s corporate nicknames”
could leave the country with US left unemployed and handed the bill for it..
    hell yes that needs investigating!

jail em all and let em await trial like any of us would be made to do,
if suspected of a serious crime.

poisoning the air, food, water, medicine…
so foreign owned big pharma-medical-insurance is guaranteed profits,
as their bankster buddies take possession of real estate for “uncovered treatment”
    yeah DC is guilty!

    • HAR, HAR CAPTN!

  6. Too bad but the good intentions of OWS may fall prey to overexposure.

Perhaps the best path, once the points have been publicized, is to go back to home districts and become active in poltical campaigns against ensconsed DC usurpers. Politicians know two principles: election and reelection.

Hit them in their comfort zone–their home base where they are vulnerable.

Note: cleaning up after yourself should have been instilled from childhood by engaged parents. The park occupiers should not have to be chided into keeping the nest liveable. That is part of the social contract they demand of others. Just my opinion.

  7. Mainstream media pumps up animosity for OWS and too many people are glad to be critical from their own comfort space like good sheep. It’s easy to understand how financial strain affects them foremost, but the reasons for their protest better change to anti-war immediately. We have a ridiculous war economy creating more misery for us and innocent civilians of countries Barry Sotoero and Petraus warmongers on.

  8. I think this is hilarious. The longer the protesters are there, the harder it is to take them seriously. Really, does anyone think these people care about keeping the park clean? The don’t even keep themselves clean. Not showering, doing drugs and fornicating under tarps on the sidewalk, while wearing/holding signs that are supposed to make some kind of point? Most of the people not only do not know why they are there, but they don’t even care. They just don’t have anything better to do with themselves. They hold signs that say “down with capitalism”, while standing on private property (Zuccotti Park), which without capitalism would be owned by the government, who probably would have booted them all by now. Probably, without capitalism, they would not have the laptops that I’ve seen some of them using. I’m not condoning the attitude of the “elitist”, but after seeing the OWS crowd, is it any wonder why the elitist have the attitude that they do? They are clueless. I hope it snows soon.

    • IN CASE NOBODY IS PAYING ATTENTION TO THE ORGANIZERS OF THIS MOVEMENT _ THEY DID MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT 2 DAYS AGO THAT INFOWARS SEEMS TO BE IGNORNING….I’D SAY THIS IS A PRETTY DARN GOOD START….PERSONALLY – I THINK THE ONES INT HE CROWD WHO ARE CLUELESS COULD BE PLANTS TO DISCREDIT THE TRUE PROTESTERS. (Notice the only ones they ever interview are people who are completely clueless. They are NOT all like that – and they are NOT all kids either – this mroning – shoot – there was a total mix of ages and ALL walks of life.)

“The truth from ANONYMOUS who organized the protests:

We are a decentralized non-violent resistance movement, which seeks to restore the rule of law and fight back against the organized criminal class.

One-tenth of one percent of the population has consolidated wealth in unprecedented fashion and launched an all-out economic war against 99.9% of the population.

We are not affiliated with either wing of the two-party oligarchy. We seek an end to the corrupted two-party system by ending the campaign finance and lobbying racket.

Above all, we aim to break up the global banking cartel centered at the Federal Reserve, International Monetary Fund, Bank of International Settlement and World Bank.

We demand that the primary dealers within the Federal Reserve banking system be broken up and held accountable for rigging markets and destroying the global economy, effective immediately.

As a first sign of good faith we demand Ben Bernanke step down as Federal Reserve chairman.

Until our demands are met and a rule of law is restored, we will engage in a relentless campaign of non-violent, peaceful, civil disobedience.

In our next communication we will announce Operation Empire State Rebellion.”

      • And so – the very DAY after they make this pretty dang heavy duty announcement – suddenly the mayor announces he’s kick em off for ‘cleaning’?? Coincidence?? I think not.

  9. They should have arrested them instead of backing down! Then sent them to the Gas Chamber at the nearest FEMA Camp.

  10. “We are the…WHAT?” I can’t quite make out what they are saying.

I have been sorta’ following the OWS stuff. I am impressed by ‘The People’s Microphone’ as well as the fact that large numbers of people are FINALLY taking to the streets of Amerika. Yet I am saddened and disturbed that many of the people in the street are as unlearned and as manipulated as the hippies that I remember from the 1960s.

I have been wondering why the police have not busted things up in New York yet. I now see that it is because, here anyway, the people are on private property. If the owners of the property want the people to leave then they should leave. This is a test of the intentions and the methods of the crowd.

Another test is if the crowd cleans up after themselves or not.

    • They probably won’t try to break it up. The powers that be most likely will allow this “movement” to silently fade away. If the MSM stops reporting on it people will start forgetting and then it’s game over.

    • “We Are The 99%”
