Artworks by Georg Sluyterman von Langeweyde

Georg Sluyterman von Langeweyde (1903 – 1978) was a German graphic artist, painter and singer-songwriter. He started his artistic ventures as a school boy and went on to study graphic arts and decorative painting. He worked as a graphics artist and then lent his skills to the NSDAP, which he joined in 1928. He created many posters, vignettes, and cartoons while part of the SA. Georg is well known for his wood carvings and linocuts. He sought to portray heroism, strength, and vitality in the face of potential death and would often incorporate folk song lyrics or proverbs. He would achieve a good deal of success within the Reich, and began work as a large-scale painter in 1940. In 1941 he volunteered to fight on the Eastern front, where he would sketch battle scenes. He ended up as a British prisoner for a year, which was lucky considering he could have been in a gulag or dead. Georg managed to continue to work as an accomplished illustrator and singer-songwriter after Germany’s defeat.
