Britain told to mind its human rights

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) said in a key report on Monday that the country should review its human rights strategy especially on terror laws, prisoners’ vote and gypsies rights.

Britain now uses the restrictions in the Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures (TPIM) law to impose detention without charges of up to 14 days on terror suspects.

Yet the EHRC “has argued that the maximum period of pre-charge detention should be four days” and only for those who have committed terror-related crimes rather than suspects.

“[TPIMs] violate long-held principles of civil liberties, including the prohibition on punishment for what people might do rather than what they have done,” the report said.

This comes as the EHRC report has also slammed the government’s refusal to comply with the European Court of Human Rights ruling that prisoners should have the right to vote saying “Human rights… apply to everyone” including prisoners.

On the gypsies’ rights, the report echoed the Council of Europe’s last week condemnation of eviction of illegal travelers from Dale Farm in Essex that described the government’s move as an outrage against human rights.

The report said the local authorities forced travelers into illegal camping by undermining travelers’ human rights.

It added their eviction violated the Article 8 of the Human Rights Act that covers the right to a private and family life.

This comes as British Foreign Secretary William Hague criticized Iran’s human rights record just three days ago in comments that now appear hugely telling in the context of the EHRC report.

“We will continue to urge Iran to address its human rights record, including at this month’s UN Human Rights Council,” Hague said in a statement.

Ironically, that was what EHRC had to tell the British government to do in the conclusion to its report named “How fair is Britain?”
