‘Osborne stabs churches in the back’

After Osborne announced a 20% charge on alterations to crumbling churches, clerics expressed their fury saying “A lot of clergy are angry. We try to help others, not ourselves,” reported the Sun.

“It’s an extraordinary stab in the back. This will have a drastic effect on local communities,” said Church of England buildings boss Anne Sloman.

Furthermore, Lord Carey, former Archbishop of Canterbury, said Christians are being “persecuted”, “driven underground”, and “vilified by state bodies” in Britain.

Carey said Christians have been excluded from several sectors of employment and could not freely express their views fearing arrest, reported the Huffington Post UK.

Moreover, Rowan Williams, who is known for his opposition to the Iraq war and the British government’s austerity measures, announced last month that he would step down as the Archbishop of Canterbury.

This comes as British Prime Minister David Cameron said last year that “we are a Christian country and we should not be afraid to say so” asserting that Christianity provided Britain with “a set of values and morals” that make it “what it is today.”

However, Carey said: “Christians are driven underground. There appears to be a clear animus to the Christian faith.”
