Chicago Police Kill Innocent Mother of Five the Day After Christmas in Chicago

Early the morning after Christmas, Chicago Police responded to a domestic violence call in an apartment building. Upon their arrival they fired a total of nine shots and killed two people. Bettie Jones, a 57 year old mother of five, was shot twice  and Quintonio Legrier, a 19 year old engineering student, was shot five times.

Witnesses say that the police were called after Quintonio threatened his dad with a baseball bat.

When the police arrived Bettie Jones opened the door for them and the police shot her in the neck shortly after.

Latesha Jones, the woman’s daughter, said she woke up to gunshots and walked out to find her mother in a pool of her own blood.

She wasn’t saying anything,” Jones said, who added that she could feel her mother breathing before she was taken away by paramedics.

The Jones family claims Bettie was shot from outside the home after she opened the door for police. They plan to file a lawsuit for her death.

Quintonio suffered from mental illness and was prone to outbursts but was not known to be violent.

Despite his mental illness Quintonius was studious and kind hearted. He graduated from Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy with honors last year and in 2013 was part of a 46 man team that completed a marathon for clean water in Africa.

At a press conference that morning at 9:3o the Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Eugene Roy said:

Upon their arrival, they were confronted by a combative individual, resulting in an officer firing shots, fatally wounding two individuals,” Roy said. “The matter is under investigation by the Independent Police Review Authority and further questions regarding this matter should be directed to them.

Chicago PD has had over 22 officer involved shootings this year alone and the history of violence doesn’t end there. Their superintendent has been fired and the community is calling for the Rahm Emmanuel, the Mayor of Chicago, to step down. The propensity to cover up police misconduct is starting to divide the city.

Chicago has not had an uprising in the style of Ferguson, Baltimore or Minneapolis, but there is a breaking point. People can only put up with so much and the recent marches in Chicago might be signs of a storm on the rise. The attempted cover up by the city of Laquan McDonald, a 17 year old, killed by Jason Van Dyke will not be easily forgotten and additional (questionable) killings like this won’t help either.
