YBS_Shingal Protection UNits_Iraq_(archives)The clashes erupted as the independence referendum campaign in Iraq’s Kurdistan Autonomous Region (KAR) came to an end. The referendum will be held on September 25, as scheduled, and despite threats from the central government in Baghdad, Iran, Turkey, and the Iranian-backed Iraqi – Shiite Hashd al-Shaabi.

The clashes were reportedly sparked when the Hashd al-Shaabi forces tried to cross through territory controlled by the Shingal Protection Units (YBS).  Local sources reported that two YBS fighters were killed as well as three from the Hashd forces. Seven more Hashd fighters are reported to have been injured.

The YBS are an armed force that has been established with the help from Turkey’s outlawed Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) to provide protection for predominantly Yetzidi areas near Khanasour. Situated along the border to Syria the YBS are also in an informal alliance with the Syrian – Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ).
