At the Munich security conference on Saturday, German Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere said Berlin and Rome have sent a “pretty tough” letter to US authorities, stating they should pay the final USD 400.9 million to develop the Medium Extended Air and Missile Defense System (MEADS).
“I expect the United States to stick to their word and fulfill the MEADS contract,” said de Maiziere.
In December, Congress defied President Barack Obama’s administration by cutting funding for the system in a USD 633 billion bill, which authorized the US military budget for the fiscal year 2013.
The bill was drafted and approved in an attempt to prevent other defense programs from being cut.
Over the past ten years, the three countries have spent about USD 4 billion on MEADS so that it can replace the Patriot missile defense system.
De Maiziere acknowledged that the chance of the US fulfilling its obligations has deteriorated after the bill’s approval.
Lockheed Martin as well as Italian, German and Pentagon officials say if the US government does not fulfill its obligation it will be forced to terminate fees equaling to about the same amount as the final payment.
