Isfahan Armenian Caliphate Council takes unearthed artifacts

Isfahan, March 6, IRNA – Historical objects that were unearthed during restoration of part of the historical Vank Cathedral were handed to the Isfahan Armenian Caliphate, a local cultural official said here Saturday.

The historical Vank cathedral in Isfahan belonging to Safavid era is restored periodically under an agreement between the provincial Organization of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism and Isfahan Armenian Caliphate Council.

During the restoration of the southwestern wall of the cathedral, two old wooden windows belonging to Safavid era as well as four cross-shaped pieces of stones were unearthed, the organization’s director general, Shahram Amiri said.

The unearthed windows and stones will be properly polished and delivered to the cathedral officials, Amiri noted.
Vank Cathedral or Amenapergich which means Holy Savior Cathedral is located in Jolfa district in central province of Isfahan. It was built during Shah Abbass II of Safavid dynasty.

The cathedral is constructed on a plot of 8,731 square meters, while its building occupies an area of 3,857 square meters.
Vank means ‘monastery’ or ‘convent’ in the Armenian language.
