TEL AVIV — An Israeli teenager, in the first such incident since the
Sunni revolt, has been killed along the Syrian frontier.

The Israeli Defense Ministry said the 13-year-old son of a contractor
was killed in an explosion as they drove in a water truck south of the
border crossing of Quneitra.

The Israeli military, responding to the first Israeli civilian death from the war in Syria, attributed the attack to an anti-tank missile fired from Syria.

“This is the most substantial incident on the border with Syria since
the beginning of the civil war,” Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter
Lerner said. “This was an intentional attack, not errant fire.”

The explosion on June 22 was said to have targeted a Defense Ministry
vehicle. The ministry has overseen a project to build a barrier of up to 60
kilometers along the Syrian frontier.

Officials said the Israel Army ordered main battle tank fire into Syria.
They said fighter-jets targeted the command and control facility of the
Syrian Army’s Brigade 90.

In a briefing, Lerner said the army found a hole in the border fence
near the explosion. The spokesman said the military has not identified who
fired the missile from Syria.

“On the other side, we are aware of an extensive rebel, or opposition
presence, but we can’t confirm who was involved in it,” Lerner said. “It was
fired directly from east to west.”

Officials said up to 10,000 Sunni rebels, including those trained by the
United States, were operating in the Syrian portion of the Golan Heights.
They said rebel militias were firing into Israel to provoke a major attack
on the Syrian military, which still controls Quneitra.
