Million Mask March Say ‘Police Are Not Your Friends’

Night of violence as police condemn protestors – summary of key events

Police chiefs have attacked “despicable, cowardly” protesters who set off fireworks at horses during masked march on Thursday evening.

Four police officers injured during an anti-capitalist march in central London that saw protesters hurl fireworks and set a patrol car on fire have now been released from hospital.

Scotland Yard said at least 50 arrests were made, mainly for public order offences with two for assaulting a police officer, on Thursday night.

In an update on Friday afternoon, the force said the injured officers have been released as it revealed that six police horses were also hurt.

The Million Mask March, organised by Anonymous to hit back at austerity measures and perceived inequality brought about by the Government, started peacefully enough, with songs and chants at Trafalgar Square.

But the demonstration soon turned ugly, with bloodied bodies being tended to by emergency crews as police and mounted officers formed human shields along sections of Westminster closed off to protesters.
Some managed to break free from the main route, heading instead to Buckingham Palace and Green Park, where protesters threw missiles such as cones and fireworks at police horses. One animal bolted as an explosive whizzed past its head.
Clad in Guy Fawkes masks, some of the supporters of Anonymous, the anarchic hacking collective, lit fires and smoke bombs on the streets.

In another incident, a photographer was hit by an Aston Martin that was surrounded by protesters in Lower Grosvenor Place, near Victoria. The man’s condition is unknown.

The injured police horses – deployed primarily in The Mall, Great George Street, Parliament Square and Trafalgar Square – are:

  • Embassy – injured near Buckingham Palace and the police rider was thrown from the horse. Embassy suffered injuries to his side, fetlock and front leg. Embassy’s rider suffered a fractured wrist.
  • Quartz – suffered an injury, believed to be caused by glass, to his hind leg.
  • Qwerty – suffered an injury to his hind quarters
  • Heather – suffered a cut to her fetlock on her hind leg
  • Illustrious – suffered an injury to his eye, believed caused by a stick
  • Quixote – suffered injuries to his front legs

The Met Police Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, said: “My officers were well and truly in the front line. Fortunately, the four injured officers are doing ok. The most seriously injured was a mounted officer who was thrown from his horse, Embassy, after they had fireworks thrown at them in the Mall.

“Injured officers, injured horses and 50 arrests are not peaceful protest. The event tied up nearly 2,000 officers – who in the main, came from our boroughs.

“But, our work does not stop here. We now have investigations ongoing – not just into Whitgift Street [29 arrests so far] but dealing with those 50 arrests from last night and identifying anyone else who broke the law. I’m really proud of everything my officers have done this week.”

Earlier, hundreds of protesters lined up opposite riot police on horseback in Parliament Square. Some threw fireworks while calling for a “revolution”.

With placards and banners saying “One solution: one revolution”, they chanted “Whose streets? Our streets” during the march from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square.

One break-away group set a police car alight, while others strayed from the permitted protest route and headed towards Buckingham Palace, where they threw missiles such as cones and fireworks at police horses.

An unattended police car’s windshield was smashed and the bonnet set on fire by masked protestors opposite St James Park tube station.
Stuart Baillie, 25, a marketing manager who saw the car set alight, said: “The police car was parked and then the group surrounded it.
“They started smashing it up and throwing burning paper at it. As the fire built one shouted ‘we need the fire brigade, someone called the fire brigade’.”
Police later said they were investigating the incident, adding that no one had been hurt.

Parliament Square was barricaded with wire fences and large crowds were at times controlled with kettling techniques while police helicopters circled above. As Big Ben chimed 8pm, protesters attempted to throw more fireworks and set off loud rockets and brightly coloured flares. #millionmaskmarch - A map of the approved protest area in central LondonA map of the approved protest area in central London A map of the approved protest area in central London Monuments along the march route were circled by police protection units – a precaution perhaps due to the VE Day monument being vandalised earlier this year. Shortly before 11pm, police announced that 28 arrests had been made for public disorder, and one man was arrested for assaulting police. Earlier in the day police arrested three men carrying knives, smoke and paint grenades, gas canisters and a lock pick.

Anonymous said it was protesting against the “encroaching destruction of many civil liberties”, the “creation of a surveillance state” and the “government’s disregard for the poor, the elderly and disabled”.

Last year’s Million Mask March saw ten people arrested after vandalism of public buildings and violence towards police officers.
Met commander BJ Harrington said: “We facilitate hundreds of protests every year in London peacefully and with the co-operation of the organisers. On this occasion a group of protesters chose not to engage with police or adhere to the conditions of the protest and were intent on criminality.

“I’d like to thank those who conducted themselves in a peaceful manner and as well as Londoners for their patience and tolerance whilst anti-social and intimidating behaviour was happening.

“Officers have been hospitalised, a police horse suffered injuries and a police car was criminally damaged during the course of the protest which is completely unacceptable. I praise the professionalism and restraint that officers have shown in the face of hostile provocation and enabled the policing operation to pass without major incidents.

“We will bring those responsible for the criminality to face justice.”
