Two men have been arrested after a New South Wales police officer was gunned down in Tamworth this morning.
The 41-year-old highway patrol officer died at Tamworth Base Hospital a short time after being shot outside an apartment building in Lorraine Street, West Tamworth, just before 8am.
Nine News understands the officer was at the address for a routine check.
Police apprehended an injured man, who is currently under police guard in hospital, while a second suspect was captured after a short search.
A crime scene has been established and a Critical Incident Investigation team has been formed to investigate the shooting.
