nsnbc : Following the publication of an article about a former Russian soldier who joined jihadi groups in Syria, the Russian Internet watchdog Roskomnadzor bullied the liberal newspaper The New Times, effectively threatening to close down the newspaper.
Roskomnadzor sent a warning to The New Times claiming that the article about the Russian serviceman who joined jihadi groups in Syria “showed signs of justifying terrorism”. Roskomnadzor has previously issued a warnings to The New Times in December 2016and in February 2016.
The state Internet watchdog / censor also stated that it doesn’t exclude the possibility of asking a court to suspend the newspaper’s license. Russian law stipulates that two warnings from Roskomnadzor within one year are sufficient for Roskomnadzor to request a court to revoke a media organization’s registration.
Yevgeniya Albats, editor-in-chief of the liberal newspaper used he Facebook page to denounce Roskomnadzor’s bullying as “classic censorship, which is banned by our constitution”.
Albats added that: “Putin publicly talks about how thousands of Russians are fighting for IS but writing about their motives and why a Russian guy from Kaluga converts to Islam and goes to Syria is a ‘sign of justifying terrorism!’”
nsnbc international editor-in-chief Christof Lehmann commented on what he described as “the watchdog’s bullying strategy” saying: “Certainly, covering the political, religious, social, economic and other factors that can prompt some people including former servicement to join radical Islamist or other insurgencies is not only legal and legitimate; Reporting on such issues is also consistent with medias’ functions with regard to public education. ..What I find most stunning in this regard is that Roskomnadzor stood by and did nothing when state-sponsored Russia Today (RT) glorified Danish Kurdish Anna Palani for having joined the Syrian Kurdish YPG / YPJ.”
