Steel workers to picket Liberal MPs

STEEL workers will picket outside the offices of Liberal MPs for opposing the Federal Government’s $300 million industry assistance package.

The Australian Workers’ Union (AWU) is holding a national day of action in NSW and Victoria even though the Steel Transformation Plan Bill passed the lower house last night.

The package set aside $300 million to help the steel industry adjust to the carbon tax, and passed 75-72 with the support of Greens MP Adam Bandt.

But the Coalition voted against it, with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott indicating his side would oppose all 18 bills associated with the carbon tax.

Protesting against this stance, AWU national secretary Paul Howes will address steel workers in Wollongong today outside the electoral office of Liberal senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells.

“Steel workers aren’t the political playthings of the Liberal Party,” he said yesterday.

He said steel workers “deserve to have their jobs protected through the steel industry transformation package”.

Wollongong is home to BlueScope Steel which is shedding 1000 jobs, mainly at its Port Kembla plant.
