THE Queen and husband Prince Philip will embark next month on what royal watchers believe will be their final trip to Australia.

With her majesty having celebrated her 85th birthday in April and the Duke of Edinburgh having turned 90 in June, the magnitude of their visit cannot be underestimated.

Their 16th trip to Australia bypasses Sydney but includes Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth. The itinerary begins in the ACT on October 19 and concludes on October 29 after the Queen and Prince Philip attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Perth, states the announcement made yesterday by the office of the Prime Minister.

The national convener of the Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, David Flint, said: ”There will be the inevitable predictions that this is the last time but we are living in the days of jet travel and she has made no indication that she is going to stop her travels. Take [the speculation] with a grain of salt – I have heard that for the last three visits.”
