The Cinema Society and Montblanc hosted the premiere of Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “Trance” this week at SVA Theater and on Thursday The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hosted a “Conversation with Director Danny Boyle” and screening of his first feature “Shallow Grave” at the Academy Theater. Examiner.com spoke with the film’s stars Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson on the red carpet for the premiere check out what they had to say about working on the project:

Q: How did you approach your character?

Vincent Cassel: In that movie in particular I tried to be as low profile as I could, nothing gangster-ish, nothing stylish, I wanted to make something not ganster-ish, so I could be seen more as a businessman.

Q: Did you do anything to prepare for this role?

Vincent Cassel: Work on my English, I take a coach and I read and correct my accent and I try to be as understandable as I can, really.

Q: What do you admire about Danny Boyle?

Vincent Cassel: Well, most of his movies, first of all, and the fact that he’s so versatile you know that he jumps from one thing to another, that he’s trying to do different styles and 95% of the time he manages to put it out.

Q: After preparing to be a hypnotist, do you think you can place someone into a trance now?

Rosario Dawson: When I was doing the research for the film and I was recording myself and we were performing and stuff and I kind of created this voice for my trances, I remember putting a tape in and my friend listening to it as we were driving out to Sunday dinner and she started wobbling on the highway and I remembered, “Actually, when I had met with hypnotherapists and got these CDs and stuff to rehearse from, it says ‘Do not operate heavy machinery,’ ‘Do not drive,’ and she was listening to my trance and she started being like, ‘I feel like I’m driving along the French countryside right now. I feel really relaxed, this is kind of dangerous’ and I was like either I’m boring you or this is really working.

Q: What was it like working with James McAvoy?

Rosario Dawson: Wonderful. He’s so great. I just watched him in “MacBeth” and I think that’s the only way you can get out of doing all the amazing press for this because he’s doing that and I was watching him doing it and he’s broken his thumb, he’s hurt his elbow, he’s so full on, it doesn’t matter he has 80 shows, he’s bringing it completely every night and it actually really made my quite nostalgic seeing him doing it because it reminded me how amazing and present he is to work worth.

From the film: Director Danny Boyle, Rosario Dawson, Vincent Cassel, producer Christian Colson, Fox Searchlight Pictures Co-President Steve Gilula all walked the red carpet. Other attendees at the Cinema Society premiere included: Patrick Stewart, Emma Watson, John Legend, Zosia Mamet, Jemima Kirke, Norman Reedus, Debbie Harry, Paul Haggis, Kathleen Turner, Gina Gershon, Gemma Arterton, Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson, Albert Hammond Jr, Fisher Stevens, Stephanie March, Tony Danza, Pablo Schreiber, Judah Friedlander, Isiah Whitlock, Holt McCallany, Gaby Hoffman, Julia Garner, Heather Matarazzo, Lola Schnabel, Paul Banks, Yul Vazquez, Michael Benz, Danny Strong, Cindy Sherman, Marina Abramovic, Wendi Murdoch, Olivier Theyskens, Anja Rubik, Jenna Lyons, Anna Sui, Reed Krakoff, Chrissy Teigen, Peter Cincotti, Tabitha Simmons, Carson Kressley, Daniel Benedict, Johannes Huebl, Josh Lucas, James Taylor, Nicole Miller, Debbie Bancroft, Sam and Kathryn Shaffer, Genevieve Jones, Lily Kwong, Gretta Monahan and Ricky Paull Goldin, Caroline Winberg, Klaus Biesenbach, Bettina Zilkha, and Cinema Society founder Andrew Saffir. The party was at the triplex Penthouse at 497 Greenwich Street (on the market for $14 million, and interestingly, in light of the film, owned by a London gallerist, Jonathon Carroll of the Carroll/Fletcher Gallery). Guests enjoyed Grey Goose cocktails in the Penthouse.
