Workers storm Peugeot Citroen plant

The General Confederation of Labor (CGT) union said 300 employees staged a sit-in on Wednesday at the Aulnay plant near Paris, which “paralyzed” the 3,000-strong factory.

The struggling company has pushed to sell the plant and lay off 8,000 workers as the automaker fell under pressure from worldwide competition and a drop in car sales in Europe in 2012.

The strike comes a day before Peugeot and union officials meet to settle an agreement over the number of layoffs at the plant.

“Employees at PSA Aulnay refuse to accept being laid off without anything. The false negotiations begun in November give absolutely nothing at all, the management is refusing to address the demands of the employees,” CGT said in a statement.

“The striking workers demand that management restart the negotiations from the beginning,” CGT union officials added.

The sit-in has setback the government from sealing a deal with unions over plans to make layoffs easier for employees and allow companies to decrease workers’ salaries through reduced working hours.

French automakers have tried to solve their problems from plummeting car sales by slashing capacity and cutting costs.
