Russia slams attack on Syrian university

The Russian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said yesterday’s attacks in the northern city of Aleppo were carried out by the enemies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

“We condemn the latest mass killing of innocent people in Syria in the most decisive way,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Members of the international community have sympathized with the armed rebel groups in Syria and those countries should take “a similarly uncompromising position toward terrorism,” the ministry added.

“It is clear that this was a ruthless, bloody provocation, revenge by terrorists for significant losses they have sustained in the confrontation with government forces,” Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in a statement.

Terrorists launched two rockets at the university complex on Tuesday. The explosions reportedly targeted an area between the halls of residence and the Faculty of Architecture on the first day of exams.

Some displaced Syrians, including women and children, who had sought refuge at the university complex were among the casualties.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the turmoil.

A recent United Nations (UN) report revealed that militants from 29 countries have so far infiltrated into Syria.
