Zarif, UN chief review latest regional developments

IRNA – Visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif reviewed the latest regional developments in a meeting with the UN Secretary General António Guterres in the Kazakh capital, Astana, on Friday morning.

Zarif is now visiting Kazakhstan to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in which it is predicted that Iran’s official membership in the organization will be raised and examined.

Iran’s top diplomat will also attend the opening ceremony of Expo 2017 international exhibition.

Guterres condemned the terrorist attacks in Tehran and expressed sympathy with the Iranian people and government on the sad occasion.

Touching upon the recent dispute between some members of the (Persian) Gulf Cooperation Council, the UN secretary general also said negotiation is a sole way for settlement of disputes in the region.

He also urged Iran to fully implement the nuclear deal between the country and world major powers, known also as the Joint Comprehensive Action (JCPOA), underscoring that the official stance adopted by the world body on the issue is to support the text and spirit of the historical deal of the deal.

Supporting the recent meeting held in Tehran on settling dust storm, Guterres stressed that the sustained management of water resources should be dealt with in a way that does not create harmful effects for the environments of other states.

The two sides also discussed the latest regional developments, Syria, Iraq and Yemen in particular.
