100s of Scots police have convictions

Scotland’s eight police forces have admitted 333 of their officers have been convicted of serious offences.

Lothian and Borders has the highest number of guilty officers with 111 of its forces, including a chief inspector who has been convicted of drugs offences, having criminal records.

This comes as Scottish media estimated that half of the officers have committed the crimes while serving for the police in different positions including constables and sergeants.

Reports said the number of guilty serving officers could even be greater than those offered by the police as all data on the subject has not been released.

The revelations have raised fears that upholding of the law and moral standards by the police are jeopardized by officers with criminal records.

“Police officers are expected to uphold both the law and the highest moral standards,” Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokeswoman Alison McInnes said.

“It is particularly worrying that officers convicted of crimes including domestic abuse and serious assault are continuing to serve. The role of the police officer should be held in respect by the public,” she added.
