nsnbc : 22 have been killed in a bombing during an Ariana Grande concert in the city of Manchester, United Kingdom Monday night.
The bombing happened Monday night during an Ariana Grande concert. The blast killed 22 and wounded another 59. Details are at this time still sketchy explosives had reportedly been planted at Manchester Arena, police believe the perpetrator was killed in the blast.
The explosion occurred at about 10:30 p.m. local time at the end of an Ariana Grande concert. Chief Constable Ian Hopkins of the Manchester police said the attacker was a lone man “carrying an improvised explosive device, which he detonated causing this atrocity.”
Some eyewitnesses reported that they initially believed a panic had ensued during an on-stage firework. Several other eyewitnesses reported that they had been hit by bolts, suggesting that the explosive device was built to disperse shrapnel and that it was an improvised device.
A 23-year-old man was arrested in the south of the city and armed police in riot gear raided a nearby flat. Royston Court, on Carlton Road, was cordoned off at about 12.20pm. It is understood that the man who allegedly detonated the bomb lived there.
The self-proclaimed Islamic State has – allegedly – claimed responsibility for the bombing shortly after the arrest of the – unidentified – 23-year-old alleged perpetrator. Greater Manchester Police have also said they conducted a controlled explosion in the Fallowfield area of the city and made two more arrests.
Manchester police stated that they are treating the incident as a terrorist attack. Prime Minister Theresa May who is campaigning for elections on June 8 called the attack “callous”. The youngest victim was no more than eight years old.
