A former Israeli Jewish soldier was arrested in Egypt, during an attempt to join Hamas in order to fight against Israel, according to press reports from Egypt.
Egyptian security officials say they have arrested a former Israeli army sergeant after he illegally entered the country from Israel in the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula.
Authorities say the 24-year-old unarmed Israeli entered Egypt near the Taba border crossing.
He was arrested by Egyptian authorities Monday. Authorities say he was trying to reach the Gaza
Strip through the Sinai to fight alongside the Palestinians against Israel. The Israeli soldier was identified as Andre Yaacoub.
Pshenichnikov AKA Andre, a Jewish immigrant to Israel from Tajikistan, made headlines earlier this year when he announced that he wanted to renounce his Israeli citizenship and move to a Palestinian refugee camp in the West Bank.
Israel has so far made no public comment on this incident.
