54 killed in Iraq bomb blasts

Two car bomb blasts claimed the lives of at least 22 people on Wednesday in the central city of Hilla.

Meanwhile, four bomb attacks and two shooting incidents hit Baghdad, an interior ministry official said.

At least 18 people were killed and dozens more were wounded after four coordinated car bombs hit processions of Shia pilgrims across Baghdad early Wednesday.

According to police officials, the first Baghdad bomb struck pilgrims in a procession at around 5 a.m. in the northern neighborhood of Taji.

Within hours, three more explosions hit other processions in different parts of the city.

Two more car bombs in the city of Balad also killed four people.

Details about other people killed in the incidents have not been given yet.

The number of the victims is expected to rise.

Terrorist attacks have decreased in Iraq, but explosions and shootings take place across the country on a daily basis, often targeting Shia-majority areas and local security forces.

According to an official figure by Iraqi ministries of interior, a total of 132 Iraqis were killed in May.
