The temblor struck at a depth of 35 kilometers (21 miles) at 6:22 a.m. (1222 GMT) on Sunday, and was located 28 kilometers (17 miles) southwest of Suchiate in the southern state of Chiapas, near the country’s border with Guatemala.
There have been no immediate reports of damages or casualties. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Hawaii’s capital Honolulu, did not immediately issue a tsunami warning.
On March 20, a 7.4-magnitude quake jolted southwestern Mexico, killing two people and damaging thousands of homes.
Mexico sees an average of seven earthquakes daily with a magnitude greater than 3.0, according to the country’s National Seismological Service.
