According to Gary Hildreth, a public affairs officer for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, the USS Miami’s reactor was not operating at the time and was not affected.
Port spokeswoman Tami Remick said the fire broke out in the forward part of the vessel housing living quarters and command and control spaces on Wednesday.
All nonessential personnel on the submarine were ordered to evacuate. The cause of the Wednesday fire is not yet known.
The injured included three Portsmouth Naval Shipyard firefighters, two crew members and two civilian firefighters providing support.
The submarine, whose home port is Groton, Connecticut, arrived at the shipyard in March to undergo maintenance work and system upgrades.
