According to police, the Briton was a maritime security officer on the ship MV SVS Frobisher, which is owned by Specialised Vessel Services (SVS), a leading provider of charter vessels to the maritime security industry.
An SVS representative said that the company had no comment to make about the incident.
Maritime security is a growing industry in East Africa, where commercial shipping often hires armed antipiracy escort vessels to help ensure a safe passage through the waters off Somalia.
“We were made aware of the death of a British national in Mombasa on 24 July,” a Foreign Office spokesman said. “We stand ready to provide consular assistance.”
