nsnbc : A court in Estonia has sentenced the Russian citizen Artem Zinchenko to five years in prison for espionage. Zinchenko was found guilty of cooperating with Russian the Russian intelligence service GRU.
Artem Zinchenko has been living in Estonia since 2013 on a residence permit. The court determined that he was recruited by Russia’s Main Intelligence Service (GRU) in 2009, before he moved to Estonia.
The court also found him guilty of having spent the next four years collecting information about troop movements in Estonia and information about other objects of national importance.
Estonian intelligence services first disclosed in April this year that they had “apprehended a Russian spy”. However, the name was not reported at the time. Zinchenko was reportedly already arrested in January 2017.
The court also ruled that Zinchenko passed sensitive information on to members of the GRU on multiple occasions, both by means of special communication and in person, on visits to St. Petersburg.
