Washington, D.C.-based Pegasus Global Holdings, an international tech development and telecom company, announced Tuesday it plans to build a privately financed, small city on 20 square miles in New Mexico for testing and evaluation of new and emerging technologies.

The test city — with no permanent population — would create about 4,000 direct and indirect jobs. The center would be aimed at “real world” testing of smart grids, renewable energy integration, next-gen wireless, smart grid cyber security and terrorism vulnerability, the company said in a news release.

“I am confident this innovative project would provide a great boost to New Mexico’s economy,” Gov. Susana Martinez said.

The company said that in next five months it will analyze locations, construction, operation, financial viability and economic impact of the center.
