Afghan militants torch 6 NATO tankers

Afghan army officials told Press TV that the incident took place on Thursday after unidentified armed men attacked the tankers parked at a terminal near the US-run Kandahar International Airport, located 16 kilometers (10 miles) southeast of Kandahar City.

They added that three tanker drives suffered injuries as a result of the act of terror.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the assault on the oil tankers. He claimed that dozens of drivers were killed and injured, and 12 tankers were also set ablaze in the incident.

The attack comes days after six supply vehicles transporting fuel destined for US-led forces in Afghanistan went up in flames following an ambush in the southwestern province of Nimruz.

Afghan officials said Taliban militants destroyed the tankers in the Delaram district of the province late on Monday.

This is while the Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed that the militants destroyed nine tankers along with seven escorting vehicles.

Delaram governor Abdul Karim Barahawi said at least four Taliban militants were killed in an airstrike fallowing the attack.

A similar ambush last week destroyed five NATO fuel tankers. Dozens of Taliban militants were gunned down in the ensuing clashes.
