Six Maoist rebels slain in east India

The gun battle erupted in the Karamdih village of Latehar district, situated some 1,100 kilometers (682 miles) southeast of the national capital New Delhi, on Thursday and lasted for five hours, Times of India newspaper reported.

Inspector General of Police Deepak Verma said the security men had seen bodies of six Maoists being dragged away by their comrades after they were hit by bullets.

Meanwhile, Superintendent of Latehar Police Kranti Kumar told reporters that a police officer, identified as Satyaprakash Jaiswal, was killed during the heavy clashes.

He added that another policemen sustained injuries in the incident, who was taken to medical center to the state capital Ranchi to receive treatment.

The Maoists and affiliated separatist groups hold sway in more than a third of India’s 600-odd districts. More than 6,000 people have lost their lives since Maoists — known as Naxalites — launched their bloody campaign against the Indian government in the West Bengal village of Naxalbari in 1967.

They have sought to enforce a communist rule in these states since then.
