Afghan security foils attack on Kabul

“A group of insurgents armed with suicide vests, rockets and machineguns planned to seize a tall building in Kabul’s (central) Shar-i-Naw area,” AFP quoted National Directorate of Security spokesman Lutfullah Mahsal as saying on Thursday.

A gunfight erupted as Afghan security forces acting on intelligence, stormed a house in Kabul’s eastern Pul-e-Charkhi neighborhood, Mahsal said.

An explosives-laden mini-van had also been found in the house, Mahsal said.

The alleged bombing plot comes as 51 people, including 36 attackers were killed on April 15 in the biggest coordinated attack on the capital in 10 years of war.

The attack led to 17 deadly hours of fighting as 3 squads of Taliban attackers positioned themselves in high buildings under construction, opening fire on government buildings, embassies and military bases.

The latest gun battle in Kabul comes amid growing unrest around the capital and as NATO reported a rise in militant attacks in recent months.

According to NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) attacks in the second quarter of this year were 11 percent higher compared to the same period last year.

The US-led military alliance said that the highest number of attacks in nearly two years was witnessed during June alone, when more than 100 assaults a day, including firefights and roadside bombings, were reported throughout the country.
